Dinner Cruise, Yacht or the Public Ferry?

Take the dinner cruise for one festive evening with a show, a sunset yacht for the light and a guide, a private yacht for a group or an occasion, and the Şehir Hatları ferry if you only want to see the strait for the price of a coffee. They sail much the same water. What differs is the hour, the size of the boat, whether anyone feeds you, and who else is on board.

The long tour sails from Eminönü up to Anadolu Kavağı near the Black Sea, waits there over lunch and comes back in the afternoon; the short tour is the afternoon version, calling at Üsküdar and Ortaköy.

The dinner cruise: the evening out

The dinner cruise is the only one of the four that is a whole evening: dinner at your own table, a Turkish night show of folk dances, a whirling dervish, belly dancing and a DJ, and the palaces and bridges floodlit outside. A sunset cruise on a smaller yacht trades the show for the view and an explanation of it. Golden City Tours’ sunset yacht cruise boards at Kabataş and has an English-speaking guide on deck, with tea, lemonade, baklava and fruit; it is from $21 a person in current promotion (usually $42) and rated 4.9 from 4,138 reviews. Its route runs past Dolmabahçe and Çırağan palaces, the Ortaköy Mosque, the Bosphorus Bridge, Arnavutköy and Bebek. Time it with the sunset table, then have dinner in Karaköy or Beşiktaş.

The private yacht: your own boat

For a proposal, a birthday or a family of ten, a private yacht is the one where the boat goes at your pace. Efe Yat’s private yacht with a guide is from $280 for the boat for up to 13 people, about two hours with snacks, tea and coffee and hotel pickup from the old city and Taksim, rated 4.8 from 244 reviews. Hotel drop-off is not included, and the company asks you to message it before booking to confirm the time. Shared by eight, the yacht costs about what eight dinner-cruise tickets do, without the dinner.

The ferry: the strait for small change

Şehir Hatları’s tours are the honest budget answer. There is no dinner, no show and no commentary, and in winter there is no evening sailing, but you see the same shore. The short tour leaves Eminönü at 14:40 every day; the long one at 10:35, and it is a full day out with the stop at Anadolu Kavağı. The ordinary commuter ferries across to Üsküdar or Kadıköy cost a single transit-card fare and are a fine short taste of the water at sunset. Buy tour tickets at the pier or on the company’s website.
