The Best Time for a Bosphorus Cruise

Istanbul sunset times for every month, how cold the deck gets after dark, and when a sunset cruise beats a dinner cruise: the season and the hour for a Bosphorus cruise.

Updated October 2026

The best time for a Bosphorus cruise is the hour around sunset, and the best season is May to October, when the deck is warm after dark; a dinner cruise runs all year, but from November to March you watch most of it through the windows. Istanbul is on Turkish time (UTC+3) all year, with no clock change, so sunset moves from about 17:40 in December to about 20:40 in late June. That swing decides what you see from a dinner boat.

The dinner boats keep roughly the same hours all year: Turyol boards at Karaköy between 20:00 and 20:30, and Mega Lüfer’s pickup vans collect hotel guests between 19:00 and 20:00. So in June and July you sail out as the sun goes down, while in December the sun set nearly three hours before you board. Mega Lüfer’s dinner cruise and show, from $31 a person in current promotion (usually $38), checked October 2026, sails every evening of the year.

Summer: sunset on the water, the bridges after dinner

From May to August the sun sets late, so an evening dinner cruise boards in daylight or dusk and the palaces, the Ortaköy Mosque and the first bridge go by in the last light. The bridges are lit by the time the boat turns back. The nights are mild (an average low of 18 to 21 °C in June, July and August) and the open deck is where people spend the show’s breaks. The cost is crowds: it is the busiest season, so window tables and the better-placed tables go first.

Autumn and spring: the sweet spot

September, October, April and May are the months to aim for if you can. Sunset falls between about 18:25 and 20:15, close to the start of the dinner cruises, the evenings are cool rather than cold (13 to 18 °C on average at night), and rain is still the exception. Bring a jacket for the deck: on the water after dark it feels colder than the figure in the table.

Winter: lit bridges, a warm saloon and a coat

From November to March the sun has set long before a dinner cruise boards, so the whole route is a night view: the palaces floodlit, the two bridges lit, the shore towns as strings of light. That is not a worse view, but it is a different one, and it is seen mostly from inside: the average night-time low is 4 to 7 °C from December to February, and January and December each average about 16 rainy days. The dinner boats are enclosed and heated, so the meal and the show are unaffected; plan only short trips onto the deck. December 31 is the exception to everything: the New Year’s Eve cruises are a separate product at a much higher price.

When a sunset cruise is the better choice

If what you want is the light on the water rather than dinner and a show, book a sunset cruise instead and eat on land afterwards. GetYourGuide’s most reviewed is the sunset cruise on a yacht with a live guide, from $21 per person in current promotion (usually $42), checked October 2026, rated 4.9 from 4,138 reviews. A sunset cruise lasts about two hours: Mega Lüfer’s sightseeing cruise takes two hours and moves its departure with the sunset, and the yacht cruises leave Kabataş before sunset. Book the departure that puts sunset in the middle of the trip, using the table above.

The verdict by season

  • May to October: the dinner cruise at its best, with dusk on the way out and the lit bridges on the way back. Book a few days ahead for a window table.
  • November to March: the dinner cruise still runs and the night view is the whole show; dress for a cold deck. A short sunset cruise in the afternoon is the warmer way to see the shore in daylight.
  • Light rather than dinner: a sunset cruise, then dinner in Karaköy or Kadıköy.
